The archbishops of Mainz possessed an exceptional importance within the medieval German Empire, because they lead the chapel at the court of the Roman-German kings as arch-chaplains and had been acting permanently as arch-chancellors within Germania since 965. Both offices already combined archbishop Liutbert (863–889), the issuer of the earliest deed kept (No. 1). Alltogether this DIGUB-volume presents the 24 oldest, originally maintained deeds issued by the archbishops of Mainz until 1109. Therefore, one can get a deap insight into the formal development of the episcopal deed. Except of a very few examples (No. 1, 2, 7, 21) they all are sealed deeds. Among them there is a very elaborate one by archbishop Liutpold from the year 1057 with two seals (No. 5). The early remaining seals show the archbishops as head-and-shoulder portrait, only archbishop Ruthard (1089–1109) changed to the throne-seal.
