Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Dresden and Leipzig
If the whole world pays homage to the genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, then – Saxony cannot be missing. After all, the well-traveled artist made stops in Dresden and Leipzig on his way from Vienna to Potsdam and Berlin – a fact that surely is not generally known.
In this volume – published by Eudora publishers – authors describe and discuss in ten articles various aspects of musical life in Dresden and Leipzig during Mozart’s stay in both cities. The work of the St-Thomas-Choir and of the Leipzig palace-organist and Mozart-friend Carl Immanuel Engel are discussed as well as the performances of Mozart’s operas in central Germany since the end of the 18th century, the role of Leipzig music-publishers in the spread of Mozart’s music, and finally the works composed by Mozart for his admirers and artist-friends in Leipzig. This also includes two pieces of chamber music, which he dedicated to the blind glass harmonica virtuosa Marianne Kirchgessner, who moved to Gohlis near Leipzig in 1799/1800. During the book presentation, this favorite instrument of Romanticism, which is rarely to be heard today, will exude its magic.

„Real adventures are in travelling …“: People(s) and (Hi)Stories from the Balkans
Over centuries, the south-eastern part of Europe offered travellers colourful images and fascinating lifestyles. Mihailo Popović has looked at travelogues on the Balkans of the 14th to 16th centuries from different perspectives and made them accessible. He is currently leading an academy-project that examines – among other topics – the power- and social structures in Macedonia. On the basis of this new research, his own travels and encounters as well as numerous photographs, he will present the Balkans as a region of history and culture and thus he will show how the images change …

EYE CONTACTS WITH CLARA AND ROBERT SCHUMANN – For Clara Wieck’s 200th birthday

Editor and historian Dr Ralf C. Müller will show, how these books can be practically used in the fields of education and tourism.

Eye contacts with Robert Schumann – Encounters in today’s Dresden

The Leipzig Schumann-expert Prof Dr Hans Joachim Köhler has shown in earlier publications, how places, despite their changing face, authenticate themselves out of their own history and open ways into the past and its protagonists to attentive viewers of all times by eye-contacts.

OUTLOOKS – INSIGHTS.
Robert and Clara Schumann on trips through Saxon Switzerland, the Harz-Mountains and in Dresden

The wild nature and the new place of residence were to give new powers to the Schumanns. They could do it – in quite different ways, of course. On the one hand, there was the immediate experience of unspoiled landscapes, on the other the dignified life in the royal residence – activity here, loneliness there. The impressions of the immediate experience during the journeys in Saxon Switzerland in 1841 and the Harz-journey in 1844 shortly before the move to Dresden make the feelings and thinking of Robert and Clara Schumann as a young couple as well as artists accessible to us very directly. The journeys serve the self-understanding and are akin to a search, sometimes an escape.
The Dresden period until 1850 is considered to be the richest in Schumann’s compositional life. Robert’s affection for this city and its surroundings is evident in all his works and testimonies. Historically significant events – great moments in the history of music in Dresden and in the biography of the Schumanns – include the world-premiere of the Piano Concerto in a-minor op. 54 in the »Hôtel de Saxe« with Clara as pianist, and Robert’s debut as conductor of his »Faust-scenes« in the Goethe-Year 1849 in the palace of the Great Garden. Subjective experiences such as the participation in Bendemann’s work in the new halls of the royal palace, or the several visits to Rietschel’s studio, where busts of Mendelssohn and Lessing were formed, let the reader share Schumann’s tension, which he felt while swaping ideas with his colleagues and which encouraged him in his point of view by the higher, ennobling influence of the arts.

EYE CONTACTS WITH CLARA AND ROBERT SCHUMANN
In 2019 we celebrate the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann. In Leipzig, Dresden, and other places in Middle Germany, numerous references to her and her husband can be made in many authentic places. Thus the wild nature of Saxon Switzerland and the Harz-Mountains, as well as the new place of residence Dresden should energize the artists’ couple. They could do it – in quite different ways, of course. On the one hand, there was the immediate experience of unspoiled landscapes, on the other the dignified life in the royal residence – activity here, solitude there. Robert and Clara Schumann in Saxon Switzerland and in the Harz Mountains

Schumann has done only few private trips, but the plasticity with which he – and Clara, too – depicts them offers a fascinating charm. We limit ourselves to two tours. The first – about a year after the marriage in 1840 – leads the young artist couple to the Saxon Switzerland. The personal liberation of both partners from the forced retirement imposed by Friedrich Wieck unleashed incomparable creative potentials, but meant more work and a sense of responsibility, too. Thus in the early autumn of 1841 not only a break was needed, but even the readjustment of the conjugal roles, which is why the young people seek to find their place anew in a natural environment and in an as relaxed as possible encounter with other people. The tour on the newly established »Malerweg« is cumbersome careless and gives them the necessary inspiration and freedom. The Bastei, the cowshed and the Königstein are the highlights.
At the end of the Leipzig-time – 1844 – Schumanns travel to the Harz Mountains. The productive marriage reaches a climax, and is plunged into a crisis at the same time. Robert, who burdens Clara as housewife and mother, sees his self-evident dominance as the creative partner against the interpreter falter. The strenuous tour touches, among other, Blankenburg, the culturally rich town of Ballenstedt, the medieval castle Falkenstein, the oppressive cave Baumannshöhle. The hike on Clara’s 25th birthday follows in the footsteps of Goethe and Heine and becomes a dramatic staging. The journey does not solve anything, it clarifies in a rather frightening-ridiculous way.
The impressions, directly experienced during the two hikes, open up the feeling and thinking of Robert and Clara Schumann as a young couple as well as artists. They are conducive to the self-understanding and are akin to a search, sometimes an escape.

The Leipzig Schumann-expert Prof Dr Hans Joachim Köhler has shown in an earlier publication, how places, despite their changing face, authenticate themselves out of their own history and open ways into the past and its protagonists to attentive viewers of all times by eye-contacts.

»It almost happend to me as to the fatherland …«
Heinrich Oskar Kunitzsch from Leipzig in the World War (1916–1918) –
A War Diary

Heinrich Oskar Kunitzsch from Leipzig has left behind numerous self-testimonies, including a diary of his time as a soldier in World War I, a photo-album, field letters and postcards, and a collection of quotations. All documents reveal a deep insight into the character and the mindscape of a young man, who – after finishing his apprenticeship as a bookseller – is levied into the military and had been experiencing the horrors of the war for 18 months, before he fell ill with a life-threatening illness. To what extend these documents show an authentic image of the reality of war?

About contents and patterns of medieval deeds

Since this genre of historical sources is of central importance for our understanding of personal, social and economic relations, of communication networks and intellectual processes within the mediaeval society, high-quality reproductions of medieval writings have been appeared so far in the Eudora-publishing house Leipzig. For example, a facsimile edition of a manuscript from the city archives of Cologne and several volumes in the series „Digitale Urkundenbilder aus dem Marburger Lichtbildarchiv älterer Originalurkunden“. Now, the staff of the Historical Seminar at the University of Leipzig are presenting a new series entitled „Italia Regia“, which takes into account the transmission of documents referring to the Italian territories of the Empire and also includes editions of particularly important or rare documents
Prof Dr Irmgard Fees (Munich), Prof Dr Wolfgang Huschner and Dr des Sebastian Roebert (both Leipzig) talk about, as elites were established, power was executed, and knowledge spread

TALK ON OCCASION OF THE 25th WGT

Personal Jesus. Wave Gothic between paganism and private religion

The affinity of the Wave-Gothic-subculture for religious and clerical aesthetics is undeniable. Its followers play with language formulas, myths, rituals, and symbols. This can be interpreted as a form of a new religiosity. Nevertheless, there is especially in this subculture a perceptible rejection of conventional, institutionalized religions. How religious the “goths” really are? What role play common values, and which they are? Or are the “goths” pure aestheticians who act in roles and express “only” themselves?

These and other questions discuss ethnologist Prof Dr Bernhard Streck, religious scholar Dr Heinz Mürmel, and historian and publisher Dr Ralf C. Müller.

Das Geld der Leipziger – vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart
Leipzig and the lovely money – this is quite a story of success. Primarily in this regard, one has to think of course of the local markets and fairs. Through them countless foreign coin types came to town and testified Leipzig cosmopolitanism.
Trade and commerce were increasing here, what was brought to light, developed or squandered again elsewhere in Saxony. And because everything depends on money, the abundant inflowing capital had the effect of an elixir for artistry and ingenuity. Therefore, Leipzig was a „Little Paris“, a place of the hunamities and sciences – rich and attractive and a center of European importance.
In our presentation, we embark on an excursion into the towns history and that of its money.
